Do Frontmen Enhance a Band's Performance?!

Question: Ok, my band is going to have a frontman either with or without an instrument.

Is the band's performance more enhanced if the frontman [who sings] can jump around the stage and clap their hands [you know, be very active like gerard way]

or a frontman who plays an instrument [like the guitar] and can't jump around or clap too much but is still hyper etc.

Thanks!
xoxo

In my opinion, the success of the band does have a tremendous amount to do with the frontman (or woman), but isn't necessarily more or less successful if they do or do not play an instrument.

Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith, Guns-N-Roses, Bon Jovi and Van Halen were/are all extremely successful bands in their genre and none of the front men played guitar. BUT--they had/have tremendous appeal, charisma, personality and vocals. On the flip side, Dave Matthews Band, Eric Clapton (and his many bands) and the Eagles are also extremely successful--and all of their leads play instruments.

If you have a good band, find a good lead PERIOD. Your success will depend on it.

No singing, no gigging.

I think so, energy, presence, like a cocswain or a conductor.
but not just a tool taking pictures, unless it's pictures of me.

Why would you not have a little of both? The entertainment value would double.

Yes, very much so. They are the "middleman" between
the band and the audience. The band depends on the frontman to help keep the gig going live!!

1. Singers who just sing onstage
2. Singer who play guitar or bass

I think as long as they are active, hyper and such, they are more visually entertaining. Its harder to interact with the audience while playing guitar. I dont think it really changes how successful a band becomes, but i think it looks best when the lead singer just sings.
