Use distilled water. Before you use it wet down a clean cloth with the distilled water and wipe the inside of the humidor down really well. (If the wood is dry then your humidifier will not do much.) Let it sit closed overnight before you use it.

For a humidifier you can use something as simple as a sponge dampened with distilled water. They make tubes with gel and cylinders with absorbent material but as long as you keep it damp whatever you use will work.

You will need a hygrometer. Some humidors have a little brass hygrometer built in. Radio shack makes an electronic combo thermometer/hygrometer that you can attach to the inside of the lid.

You will probably have to check the humidor a lot at first until the wood is hydrated enough otherwise your smokes will dry out. Just be careful that you don't let it get too humid.
70 degrees at 70% humidity is the optimum environment.
