Why do guitars go out of tune when you use the whammy bar?!

Question: I've never done this on my fender strat guitar before because I was afraid of it going out of tune. I did this on a friends guitar before and it went out of tune. why?

When you pull up on the bar, or press down, and then return to normal tension the string usually moves a little bit at the nut which makes it go out of tune. A tiny difference in the string length (due to different position on the nut) makes a big difference in the tuning. There are some string locks that you can buy to put on your guitar (tiny graphite ball bearings at the nut) that will allow the string to move more freely and return to its original spot. It is also important to wrap the string properly at the post to lock it down, and to stretch out a new set of strings when you first put them on to help stay in tune.

Usually because the strings stick on the nut in a slightly different place when you let off the whammy bar.

Could be a cheap whammy bar..however try a little graphite or other lubricant in the nut to allow the strings to move freely and not get hung up.

If the guitar is setup correctly, after using the whammy and it going out of tune, you should be able to dive with the whammy and bring it back up slightly and let it fall into place and it will be back in tune.

Oh yeah, use graphtech saddles and nuts.
Great stuff.

That is how all mine are set up.

The reason a string goes out of tune is because the tune is based on a set amount of tension. Therefore, if you stress a string, like, for instance, with a whammy bar, it stretches it and can also in time make it too "dead" to hold a tune. Steel strings resist better than nylon, but if you want to play that style, you'll spend more on strings.

Fender has the best tremolo system than any other guitar. You are right about that, they STAY IN TUNE.

Even a Floyd Rose, if the mecanism is not lock tight or wtv, it gets out of tune.
Ususally, the strings have to be really tight at the post and should not be more than 3 turns. Some people wind the full strings length. What happens is, when you pull the whammy up, it removes the slack from the guitar post and bingo, string or strings out of tune.
Tell your friend to buy a Fender.

Im not 100% positive on this one but on my guitar the whammy bar is connected to the metal piece where your strings are. when you press it i think it tightens and loosens the strings to make the sound effect. In doing this you're stretching and pulling on the strings so in time the guitar will go out of tune either because your stretching the strings or because you're pulling them looser.. No biggie though! You should get back up strings in case they break and an electric tuner and just re tune it when it happens. It prob isn't instant and takes some time before it will go really out of tune!
