What things should I learn to become a better guitar player?!

Question: I've been playing guitar for 2 1/2 years now. But I'm ALWAYS wondering why it doesn't show. I don't expect to be an experienced guitarist. But I see these kids that have only been playing for a year (or less!) and they're better than me!!!! It's a HUGE deal for me. I wanna be really good, but I guess I just don't know what sorts of things I should know. I look up tabs on a daily basis and learn them. But what if some day I go somewhere and ppl ask me to play for them and I look like an idiot because I've been playing for so long and don't have much to show for it?! I already play at my youth group, but that's just basic chords and stuff. I know 2 1/2 years experience is nothing compared to most.
I know quite a few chords and riffs. But I don't wanna be afraid of getting out there and stuff, you know? I know it'll take time to get good. But if any guitarists out there could give me some advice that would be great!!!!
Thanks!

I know what you mean. I think you might need to practice something more difficult. First you MUST learn chord theory. This will help your chords AND your lead guitar playing. Also, some of the most difficult playing is jazz music. See if your community has a jazz band, because some of the chords are complicated. You will be forced to learn the hard songs and play solos, and it will help your playing. It really helped mine! You will NEED to learn chord theory before you do this!!!!!
Good luck =D!
