Can some1 explain to me how the seeing in the dark with the eye patch works?!

Question: It was on mythbusters. (the pirate myth special)

Apparently if you have an eyepatch over one eye for 20 minutes, and then switch the eyepatch to the other eye and go into a dark room, you would be able to see. Can anyone give me a semi-scientific explanation of how it works?

Its because your the eye which is being covered, the pupil is dialated and is still reacting to light so when you take the patch off you can still see in the dark for about 2mins.
