An external distortion like a RAT pedal is always going to sound better than built in distortion on a lower priced amp, but you are looking at $70 or more for a RAT distortion pedal. Start your search by going to http://www.musiciansfriend.com
Click on Amps and Effects, then on amps, and then choose $50-$100 price range. They have some really helpful reviews from folks that own these products. Start there to narrow things down and then go try some in person if possible. Once you find an amp you like have them connect something like the RAT pedal to it so you can compare that to the built in distortion. Personally I would just get the best sounding amp you can in your price range whether it has built in effects or not. You can always buy the effects later.

At this price, I'm afraid you'd have to go to Yahoo/auction or ebay. Good luck to you.
