If I'm driving a long distance I will take my shoes off, mainly because my car doesn't have cruise control and my foot starts to cramp on the highway after a half hour or so of being in the same position. With my shoes off I can stretch my foot and toes without losing speed.
The shoes come off before I hit the road, and go in the wheel-well on the passenger side.

i have taken them off to drive but always put them back on if im getting out of the car. i would never pull a britney - its gross!
