Question: Like in the movies when someone throws something at their feet which breaks, releasing smoke which they then use to escape. Can you make that/buy it anywhere? Seems quite a cool thing.

i have used potassium nitrate (KNO3) and sugar mixed 60-40 by mass. use the back of a spoon and cutting board to grind the potassium nitrate and sugar. or use powdered sugar.
you can pile this up and light it with a lighter/propane torch.
if you need something other than a powder you can slowly heat it until the sugar caramelizes then put it on paper. be vary careful and if it turns the SLIGHTEST bit black QUICKLY remove from heat. heat the first few batches outside first until you get the hang of it.
