My family wants to do a jokey one- and i just want to freak them out in a fun way.

decide before hand where you are going to sit. Connect a piece of black cotton on some cheap object at the other side of the room( on a table or fireplace mantle)and run it around the furniture to the place where you are to sit. Tie it to the table leg or to something to make sure you can find the end. When the question is asked 'Is there any body there if so give us a sign'Pull slowly on the cotton and see the other peoples reaction as the object crashes to the floor
stand up and start speaking in a weird, made up language.
Knock the table with your leg.
Close your eyes and slump forward on the table ,should get some attention.
can you get them to use a ouija board? That has some lovely possibilities.
As soon as they get past "is anyone there?" (yes) and "what's your name?", you take the name you get from the board and say, "actually, there was a story of X from many years ago in this area, apparently..." and then you invent gruesome murders, revenge, etc etc.
Guaranteed that the board will then confirm every piece of nonsense you made up.
You can also use an old dusty book from the shelf as the source for your details - "read" it out loud, don't show them till the end, when you reveal that the thing in your hand is actually a dictionary, and you were looking at the definition of "aardvark".
When the question "is anybody there?" asked, fart loudly.
Edit. Then apologise and say "I think I dropped some ectoplasm."
