A question for people that were alive during the 1960s/1970s?!

Question: I wasn't alive yet to experience that generation because I was born in 1987. But I don't know, I just relate very well to that era because of the music and movies, I'm a big fan of classic Rock n' Roll bands like The Beatles, The Doors, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin and many more. My Uncle (before he died in a motorcycle accident a few years ago) never grew out of that era and people would laugh at him thinking he's stupid but he didn't care. So my question is for people who were alive back then, can you blame me? Take your time if you have a lot to share, thanks. Let me add that I also hate disco, no offense to disco fans.

To start, I graduated high school the year you were born. I was born in 1968. And I love 70's music too.

I think that there is plenty of room for all kinds of music in this world, including different genres, but also how each has evolved over the years. Today's music is not the same as it was in the 60s and 70's and that's great. It means that it's staying true to the art form of being relevant to its time. The music of each time period is supposed to be a reflection of what was happening then...and every musical era is somewhat of a reaction to the one before. There are cycles in music...one groundbreaking thing erupts on the scene, catches on around the world, it gets exploited, complicated, reworked, commercialized, and then usually must give way to a total breakdown of itself...to redefine, get back to basics, unclutter it, take it in a new direction. Sometimes it is just a radical simplification, but sometimes hard music gets overtaken by soft and vice versa. Heavy metal, for example was working class British kids' answer to the fact that peace and love and flower power had little to do with them. But flower power emerged largely in response to the violence of the Vietnam war. So there you have it. Change is good.

BUT my heart is also in the 70's and like you I was slightly young for this to be MY music (which is usually defined by what people were into in high school or college.) I don't know why it touched me so much more, but I like to think it was substance and innovation. If MY music was what I listened to in high school, I would still be in love with Bon Jovi. That is long over...no offense to them...but they are NOT Zeppelin.

I think one reason that I personally love the music of the 70's so much is because I happen to really love both blues based rock (also called guitar rock) and I love singer songwriters, and I love progressive rock. All of these really had a good run in the 70's. But as easy as these bands are to classify...they were also each unique and they all had talent. I happen to LOVE most bands that were out at that time.

70s bands were the last generation of rockers who had to balance their careers with time on the road and time in the studio. They didn't have to worry about their haircut and their video on MTV. As such, it was more about the music back then...not cultivating an image. And I think the music proves that.

Not that there weren't sucky bands back then...and we know there is plenty of talent now. It's just that now it's hard to wade through the image to hear the music. The visual imagery of the music can be a distraction from the music itself.

The 70's artists were the last of the emerging bands who cared more how they sounded than how they looked.

Blame you for what? For liking the music of the 60' and 70's?

Please!!! Be your own person. Who really cares if you like rock, country, classical, or rap? Just enjoy what you enjoy! Life is short.

my mother's still a flower child to this day. i'm your age, but i grew up with crosby, stills, and nash-janice-holly near-mammas and the pappas- all the good stuff. I'm so greatfull for all the acceptance and knowledge i've gotten from here. i completly agree with you. it was a differant time, differant view. But i think, as young people, we need to embrase today. there is plenty to fight for. check out a movie "bagdad hospital" it'll change your life.

my dads friend is that way,, he talked about banging flower hippies in CA and didn't worry about disease and the music was a natural high

I was born in 1970 and i can remember somethings and somethings i can't. i do, however, remember that we didn't have fm stations and we listened to alot of am gold. songs like from peter frampton, bee gees, shawn cassidy, were just to name a few that were played alot. others like lakeside, earth, wind & fire, the commodores, bootsie collins, sly & the family stone, were stuff u heard at house parties or around the house. we also used to listen to the monkees, and keny rogers. the am gold station was all we had here until like the later 70's early 80's. alot of the bands and all, some names i can't remember, but the songs...as soon as i hear them, i know all the words. music in that decade was and still is priceless!

I am 54, and the best thing about that era and the music was the venue you saw it in...small intimate concerts.
Not huge stadiums that stars perform at now, with large TV screens so you can the act, without aid of binoculars!
Imagine being at country fair and seeing Janis Joplin, or a performance in a movie theater with Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, how about at a club dancing to the Cars or Areosmith.
I never did see Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Beatles or the Doors...but I saw the Rolling Stones, Jimmy Buffet, Eagles, Bob Dylan, and many many more. They were great...their music will last forever...and the arena -even the price of the entry or tickets back then...was within everyones reach.
Everything is commerical now. Before...bands just wanted to play for you...

mmm..wHAT IS YOUR FAVE MUSIC ON THE 70'S???N...do you love discos???And..do you even love to watch TV?What is on the channel during those years??

First may I say that I am sorry about your Uncle's passing. He must have instilled good ideals and morality in you. Your Uncle was different, not stupid and neither are you. Stick with it, but keep your morals and ideals high and never hate anything nor anyone. We are all different, in our own way and that is what people appreciate in others.
It was a simpler time, when you knew who and where your friends were, without the 'Now' cell-phone. You knew where they were, close enough to hear your heartbeat and you could hear theirs, of a time of loyal friendships, without hidden agenda's.
