It's not a question of which is better. They are both awesome instruments. The Jazz has a narrower neck. This makes it slightly easier to play fast riffs (which is what jazz players typically do). The P bass has a more standard size (fatter) neck).
Also, the tone on each is different - so it becomes a matter of preference.
I like the Jazz because my hand is relatively small. The Jazz is easier for me to play.
Personally, i favor the jazz bass. (it has a nicer tone)
