Are record stores a dying breed?!

Question: The only actual record stores that I know of in my area are the big chain stores like F.Y.E. Of course, Wal-mart still sells them and Best Buy but I'm talking about real, privately owned record stores. There used to be one about an hour from where I live but they were destroyed by a flood. As far as I know, there aren't any anymore within a hundred miles of where I live (Ohio). So my question is this: Has the internet killed the good record stores?

I think so. Why buy the entire CD when you can download only selected tracks off the internet somewhere? I can't count the times I've been disappointed in my purchase because the song I liked...and the reason I bought the CD in the first place was the ONLY good song in the collection.

I'm not saying I don't feel bad about the trend...I'm just citing why I think it's happening. Some of fondest memories of my youth was spending HOURS in a record store trying to make up my mind which 'album' to buy with my money...back then we aspired to build the best collection rather than just acquire the newest music.

Several record chains have gone out of business. With the internet and the ability of downloading music the record industry as a whole is suffering lost profits.

Ya, people have no reason to buy records anymore because of the Internet and ipods and stuff like that. I think the only people that by records are dj's and even some of them have digital turntables so the can use Cd's.

You should look in your city directory for record stores. I know that here in Arizona we have Zia Record Store, theres like 3 or 4 locations here.

No, the internet didn't do it. Best Buy, Wal-Mart, Borders, and Circuit City did. Downloading just cleaned up the scraps. But the small store was dead on its feet by then anyway.

I never liked used record stores very much anyway. Mostly what you find in them is fifteen copies of albums no one liked.

I'm in Toronto and we're facing the same issue here which is why I'm pretty certain downloading has played a significant roll in the closure of many record stores. One of the oldest 'indie' shops called Sam The Record Man has recently shut down within the last year, same with one of our larger chains called Music World. Its a sad situation for sure but I will admit that I do like the convenience iTunes offers, I'm curious to see where everything stands five, even ten years from now. Will it all be digital?
