I taught myself by learning the basic open chords first, followed by the bar chords, then the major scale.

Then I practiced playing chromatic scales until my little finger gained enough strength to play confidently.

Back in my day (I'm 35) .. I learnt to play the guitar when I was 15 .. I learnt by playing by ear .. I would play along with cassette tapes and CDs .. over and over until I found the right notes and chords.

Nowadays, there are a million tablature websites which makes things much easier .. but you still need to know your chords.

Check out the links .. and good luck :)

i would advise you to take tuition and learn the guitar. a book or internet site is not helpful at all.

thanks for asking this question... im in exactly the same boat!! I have got a DVD to teach me, but I just cant seem to do it... he's making it look way easier than it actually is... silly silly man! lol

What do you mean by teach? Like the notes?
I just kinda googled around. Finding what the notes are and what they do. And how to use it and stuff. Different stuff like that, all though I don't play it anymore...Unless Guitar Hero counts xD

i mostly learned using guitar tabs from
http://www.ultimate-guitar.com
another thing i thought was helpful was watching videos on youtube or just music dvds of my favourite bands playing to see the styles they use when they play. ive been playing almost 5 years now and everyone whos heard me play says im 'amazing' but im alrite i suppose... started getting good about a year to a year and a half in so if it seems to be going slowly at first just stick with it =]
hope that helps

oh and just a side note... getting people to teach you is completely pointless... they charge you to teach you what they want you to learn. if you go using tabs and watching other people you can learn what YOU want to learn instead of someone else.

you can download software, I have jamorama. I have it legally, it cost me around £25, but it was in sale. My friend downloaded it with a torrent.
Another way is just by playing tabs. www.911tabs.com here you can find tabs for any song played on a guitar. Just simly try and play it and you'll get better and better. I know plenty of people who started on tabs, then when to play chords and now they have their own bands and learn even more from other guitar players. So it's just your choise where you start:)

I taught myself years ago, but I already could read music since I started out on the Keyboard. I did spend some money, early on, with a good teacher... and that is very important... you can pick up some bad habits when you start out that will be hell to get rid of later on... I just cringe when I see what bad habits some well known rock musicians have... and some can't hardly play a guitar at all.
