it took him two years to figure out that his job was to be funny?
nobody told him what the general idea was then, not even in passing?

"be funny tonight."
"be what?"
"funny."
"hmmm, i hadn't thought of that. i'll try it."
if that conversation HAD taken place he MIGHT have been funny that night.
