How can i get better at reading music?!


Question: i have been playing guitar for about two years though my first two teachers really didnt teach me much lol.

now i am getting serious about guitar and i cant get the hang of reading and playing sheet music! does anyone have any tips or websites that would be good for me to look at?

Its great that you can play by ear. Don't loose that ability and become tied to the music, but you do need to know how to read the page.

start by playing easy songs you already know.
I'm not kidding, go WAY back to the basics like Mary Had a Little Lamb and Old MacDonald. You'll be training your brain to follow the notes and rhythms--not your fingers.

step one: read through the song w/o your guitar. Say the note names to yourself in rhythm. Read through just the rhythms by "percussing" (which is how drummers talk when they read rhythms....ask a drummer for basic reading on quarter, eight, half and whole notes).
basis are:
quarter notes = ta (1 beat)
eight notes = ti (1/2 beat)
half notes = ta-a (2 beats)
whole note = ta-a-a-a (4 beats)

Step two: play the song.
