Because they sound like they are trying to rock and be hard core but their lyrics are weak, so they appeal to old, conservative people that want to feel cool listening to it.

I like them. Their songs, for the most part have meaning. They have a good beat and excellent guitar. They also have a sense of humor eg "I wanna be a Rockstar."

Oh the great mysteries of life...why do people listen to crap? For one thing, people don't listen to song lyrics, so they don't notice that all the verses many of Nickelback's songs are horrible...just basically saying random things in no particular musical form...
