The book is better by a far stretch. As one person on another question put it, there's just so much that's lost in translation.
My favorite character is Gandalf. He has incredible depth and character. You think you have him pegged and he completely changes your perspective of him in the next scene. He is as warm and caring as a mother's embrace and hard and cold as steel all at once. Its incredible to watch his own inner struggles as the story progresses. That and he reminds me of my dad.

The books are superior but the movie does a good job of sticking to the story.Strider is my favortie character because we have alot in common.Not so much the negative aspects of his personality like his belief that his blood was tainted by the treason of Isildore and by this he couldn't be a good king, but his more excellent qualities as a warrior where i avoid battle if possible; but when the option is battle, never surrender or expect others to do what i myself wouldn't do.And also how he gave up Arwen rather than have her give up immortality to be with him.
My favorite character is Sam. He's the only person in the series strong enough to be completely untempted by the One Ring (other than Thom Bombadil). Even Gandalf and Galadriel know they wouldn't be strong enough to resist its evil.
Book is more detailed, but I like the movies better. The books take soooooooo loooooooong to read.
