I'd get a flock of seagulls to carry each item of my shopping in their beaks. That way everyone is happy.

good point, and did you notice there was nothing in the budget about training for seagulls was there? GB and his motley crew just adore banning things and making us feel bad and ashamed about our heritage, driving big cars, smoking, having something to carry your shopping home in, and loads more besides. But this sounds too cynical. Really it is good of them to be so thorough and thoughtful in their efforts to give us some good old fashioned nannying.

Why don't they stop using unnecessary packaging on the stuff we are buying from the supermarkets in the first place?

The bags are a big problem because we are going through millions every year. They arent saying to ban them but they think that we can have some more environmentally friendly ways. for example charging for each bag ( people wouldnt use as many) or using the 'bags for life', so that people would bring their old bags back into the supermarket and re-use them. I live in France and it's already put into place. People bring shopping baskets to the shops or re-use their sturdy bags.
John Humphries says it's not good enough just to use your old carriers as bin bags. Well, if I don't I'll just have to buy bin bags!!

Believe it or not, plastic carrier bags didn't exist when I was a child. People just had shopping bags, as I do. I have three string bags which I take out with me.
Well...I still have my old stretchy string bag and an old deep tartan shopping bag from donkey's years ago.
If they didn't make everything so big with all of the unnecessary packaging wrapped round it we wouldn't NEED so many bags in which to carry the shopping in the first place ! -
With the price of groceries at the moment, who can afford to do shopping anyway.
This is utter BS! What about all the plastic wrapping and trays the stuff is delivered to the shops in????
And what about all the plastic and polystyrene they package tomatoes, apples, cakes, bread, and umpteen other types of food in?
Tax the supermarkets for using that and leave the bags alone!
They can make the bags more bio-degradable, Waitrose and Ocado already do so!
Most get recycled in other ways anyway.
This is just scaremongering and another way of taxing people based on the unproven Global Warming theory.
If the governent is really so "green" it should force all the massive office blocks in London and other cities to turn off lights and computers when the buildings are not in use.
If I could have the money Canary Wharf spends on electricity in one year I could probably retire in comfort!
I use my own bags anyway, it's the retailers fault for providing free bags. They should start charging for bags then no-one would buy them.
I'm going to use a suitcase with wheels
