Stolen coat from nightclub?!

Question: we were in london a week or so ago and i paid for my coat in the cloakroom. when i went to get it it was gone. had to wait until club closed (2hrs later) to check empty cloakroom and still be empty handed. Manager promised me on night they would reimburse my coat value and give us a free night out.

I am in the process of writing them a letter stating the facts and requesting they reimburse the £150 for my coat.

Do clubs have any sort of responsibility ir liability of coats etc in their cloakrooms as obviously i had paid them to look after it???

Any advice?

It depends if they had a sign up saying they didnt hold responsibility? You are within your rights claiming its their liability - you paid for a service and the person in charge should have been checking tickets to make sure they gave the right coat to the right person. Do get the money and the free night out.
I would suggest you write to the local areaTrading Standards (in whatever borough in London the club is in) and get the answer from them. Did you report it to the police? Do so, and get a crime number, which you'll get even if they dont want to investigate. There may be something in your own insurance policy too - some home policies do cover losses incurred whilst on holiday or travelling so thats worth remembering if you dont get the money back after all.
Good luck

That happened to me, i never saw any money or even an appology. If they give you your money back they will be fulfilling their obligation to you, good luck!

I'm pretty sure they'll have a policy stating that items are left at the owners risk, and they are not liable for any loss or damage.

If you get anything out of them you'll be doing well.

most clubs i have been to have notices saying that items left in the cloakroom are not the responsibility of the club or something like that, its along the same lines as when you leave a car in a supermarket car park.

If you paid them to keep your coat for you while you were inside then they will be liable, what idiots how did they give someone the wrong coat don't you get numbers or something? Don't worry its a club they bring in the big bucks and you will prob be paid the money back.
Even if there was a sign saying they weren't responsible (which i havn't seen round my clubs) the fact the manager promised you the money is another thing now.

From where I am from, when we go to a nightclub and put a coat in a cloakroom when we pay we are given a number so that we are assured that I will get my coat back, which will have the same number attached to it. In your case it shows the club's lack of responsibility and since you paid them to keep your coat and not to take it, then you have all the right to write a letter, If you don't get your money within a week, I would send a letter and also would try and give bad publicity to them by posting your complaint on newspapers etc.... Leave this as a last resort if you don't get your money back.

You should post your question in "Home > Politics & Government > Law & Ethics"

Personally I think they do not have to pay you anything as they always have signs up saying they are not liable for lost items. Do you have any proof ? Did they sign a statement that night ? If they didn't, you have no case IMHO ... Sorry

If you post your question in "Law" you might get better answers ...
