Why is the String Section in the orchestra largest?!

Question: I've always wondered why the string section in the orchestra is largest compared to the horn section. I myself, am a clarinetist.

Its because string instruments can't play as loud as wind, brass and percussion instruments, so they need lots of them to balance the sound.

i don't know but in school orchestra is just sting intruments
