How long do concerts usually last? What to expect?!

Question: I'm going to my first concert tonight and it's a metal/hardcore band. I don't really know what I'm getting myself into here...lol. So, what should I wear? How long will it probably be? Any other advice?

Hi Rufus, I have been to over 200 rock/metal concerts..yes, I am older than you but not too old! Anyway, first and most importantly, wear hearing protection. Go to your local drugstore and get some that you roll up and insert into the ear canal. I suffer from a constant ringing in my ears. This is due in a large part to way too many loud concerts, too many hours with my portable music player blasting in my ears, and my car stereo cranked too. Having said all of that, I always wear a pair of comfortable jeans and a t-shirt. I almost always buy a concert shirt as well. That way I can "fly my colors" and let people what I did and who I like. Be careful about getting down on the floor; there are usually mosh pits going or some such craziness. I have been to concerts where it was not reserved seating and the crowd started pushing so hard that the stage actually moved!! I have seen people get trampled too, so be careful. I am not trying to scare you, I am just wanting to educate you and keep you from getting hurt. Concerts are great deal of fun.
The concert, at least the ones I have been to, last about 3 to 4 hours. That includes the warm up, or opening act, and the headliner. I hope this helps. And, honestly, that hearing protection is very important. I have had my ears ring for up to 4 days after a show! Good luck and enjoy.

usually around 2-3 hours give or take, the headliner (around an hour) and maybe 2 "warm-up" acts abour half an hour each.

Dress as light as you can without (if you're a guy) being naked or (if you're a girl) lining yourself up for a groping. It gets pretty hot and squashed.

You'll have an awesome time, it'll be very hot and sweaty so be prepared for that. You might end up on the floor at some point :D

Have an awesome time

Wearing something comfortable, but not too loose. Also, make sure your shoes won't fall off! Theirs always 2 or 3 people that have a show fall off.

The concert will last a few hours, even though it doesn't seem like it.

Also, just so you know, metal fans and hardcore fans hate each other, even though they often attend the same concerts. Don't be surprised if there's fight between a mosher and a hardcore dancer.

Dont expect anything. I see a lot of questions like this, and I usually dont answer. But you seem like an affable chap. So here goes. I'm a veteran of hundreds of concerts and almost a couple of hundred bands. (Yup, I'm an old guy.) The best way to enjoy a show is to go with no expectations. Wear what makes you comfortable. And just enjoy the show.

How long? Depends on the band, local laws etc. Three hours including opening acts is probably average, though you never know from night to night. I've seen the same band to way over or under that average many times. I once went to a Grateful Dead concert that lasted from 7:00 p until 6:30 the next morning. Ya never know.

Just enjoy the show!!!
