Question: Is it easier to learn to play the violin if I already know how to play the guitar??
Music theory is not a problem...

Music theory is not a problem...

Your guitar skills have helped you learn chords, which may help with the violin. However, reading the notes and rhythms on the treble clef is a little different from just playing chords, which are usually written above the staff or even just above the words to songs. Unless you've learned how to read music, that will be something new for you.

Physically, if you play your guitar a lot, you have developed calluses on your fingers of your left hand, which will probably help with your violin playing initially. Most of my beginning violin students complain that their fingers hurt at first. That's why you can't practice a lot till you've been playing a while and your fingers have calluses. That's one advantage I can think of. It will still be awkward learning to hold the instrument properly. These are just things you have to get used to as a violinist. Good luck!

As to violin or viola, it's a personal preference. Do you prefer to play the melody when you're in a group, or would you rather almost always play harmony? Violas almost never get the melody (especially in orchestral pieces), but they have a lovely deep rich tone. So it's really up to you! Report It

  • Well, not really.
You mite not even use the same cleft.
(Violin is Trouble cleft) My friend plays the
cello, and is trying to play guitar, and
said the cello didn't help at all!
Also anyways, you should play the Viola,
    cause everybody plays the Violin.

But whatever you do, don't try bass.
Because of your prior experience, it will
    just mess you up.
    All the strings are backwards.
The highest one is G, then theres D, then theres A, then theres E, the lowest!

But whatever you chose to do, I hope I helped ?

guitar has frets so you know where to put your fingers and be dead on with the notes each time...violin may be quite hard to earn...without a teacher I would not try it myself.
