I agree that it seems random and that censorship is often misguided. I used to wonder this myself.
The word "a$$" isn't necessarily derogatory. One might use the word "a$$" to mean "donkey". However, an a$$hole is an a$$hole however you spin it...obviously usually referring to the anus or to a f*ing jerk, neither of which are pretty (not that donkeys are particularly cute) :-D
It's silly, but I imagine this is why they bleep out "hole" and not "a$$"...
