it depends on the sound you are looking for and what price you are willing to pay!. plus is it an electric or an acoustic you are looking at!?
i personally would get a gibson or epiphone since they are the most rounded out for all types and styles!. but for an acoustic, yamaha is ok!. just remember that if you get an electric, they want an amp too!.!.!. and little amps are only for practicing!. the big ones are for bands!.

Not to over simplify the question, but you will basically get what you pay for!. Fender makes $99 guitars and $5000 plus guitars!. I assume you mean acoustic guitars!. Just try to spend at least $300 so it won't be so hard on his fingers!. If your budget doesn't allow that or if your worry that he may not stick with it make sure to have a professional "set up" the guitar for a beginner!. That will make a less expensive one much easier to play!. I have a professional set up done on every guitar I buy!. It runs $40 where I live!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
