Hi, good question!.
A sock is fine, as long as you have something long and pokey -- such as a knitting needle -- to which you can attach the sock!. All you have to do is rip a hole in the sock, stick the needle-like object in, twist the sock once or twice around the needle, and go for it! A lot of flutists miss underneath the keys!. You really want to turn your needle so you get underneath the buttons and keys because after a while, they'll start to stick if you don't keep them clean!.
Other stuff you can stick in your flute are:
Old pieces of shirts
Rags
Old eyeglass cleaning fabrics
Just make sure it'll all fit inside the flute! ;-]
Polish the outside too! I like my flute very shiny because it looks more professional!.
Good luck and hope I helped! ?Www@Enter-QA@Com
