They spent time not just in writing but also in research!. When you do a period piece you want it to be authentic!. Once they have their material in place the next step is the Director doing his job!.
For all it's financial success and critical acclaim this was the biggest flaw in "Spartacus!." Had the writers done a little more homework and research they would have known the execution scenes at the end of the film were not accurate!. And the Director would have made sure when they hired extras for the shot of the army there would have been no scenes in the final cut of extras wearing USC t-shirts!. and sweatshirts!.
A similar problem came to light with the filming of "Naked Prey!." Though this was supposed to be a period piece set in 19th century Africa a long panoramic shot caught a car driving down a highway a few miles away!.
Bottom line: it wasn't just the writers!. The Directors have to keep their eyes open when they're watching the dailies!.

I think they achieved such high success because they're story really appealed to the public, and their consciences!.
Even today there are people who know and like the story because of its properties of being looked after and its morals of Karma of taking from the 'rich' people who often take advantage of the 'little people' and giving back to the public!.
