I was into the make up stage!.!. things like lip gloss, eyeshadow, or maybe nail polish is good!.
Or!.!. clothes!.!. every girl loves clothes, or a little purse/bag!.
I suggest going to claire's!. its really nice for little gifts, that is affordable as well

Well it's very simple actually!. Try to get to know from your daughter some information about her friend's personality!. Try to get her to ask her friend indirectly about her interests without hinting that she's getting her an xmas gift!. Then combine all these information together!. For example: "She likes !.!.!.!.!." "So I should get her a (movie/book/game/doll/etc) based on !.!.!.!.!." That's it!.

Just think of your daughter and go with that, they are friends they must be close to the same age!? I am sure your daughter would know or be able to give clues!.
If I was to buy a gift it would be a borders books gift certificate, its so fun there, borders has CD listening stations, books, coffee, desserts!. I spent a girly day there with some kids and adults and we had a blast hitting all the listening stations, drinking coffee or hot chocolate, was a very memorable day!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

a sweater (from a cute store like hollister, ae or abercrombie kids!.!. etc!.)
a wool scarf & hat set (they have some really cute ones at abercrombie kids)
a necklace & matching earrings
small perfume (like viva la juicy or hollister!.!.!.)
how about something from bath and body works!?!? they have many great lotions, fragrances, lip gloss, accessories!.!.!. your bound to find something she'd like there!.
