Are exaltations of planets real??? Mars in Capricorn?????

I ask this because some websites say that they don't believe in them. My Mars is in Capricorn and while I must say I do rate my martian qualties very high :P (I have tremendous staying power and tremendous determination to have something, even though I'm slow to start), I do think it's kind of odd that Mars would be exalted in a feminine sign, being that it's a masculine planet. So what's up with this exaltation stuff, what do you think about it astrologers??? Is it real or should a planet just be in its dignity to be the best it could be??

Dignity is an interchangable term.

The sign that a planet rules naturally is its sign of dignity. A planet is essentially dignified when it occupies its natural sign of dignity or its sign of exaltation; it is accidentally dignified when placed in its natural house. It is in domal dignity when in its own sign.

My mars is in Capricorn and I am entirely driven but also able to pace myself. The fact Mars is masculine is not a factor. Mars rules Scorpio and it is a feminine sign.
