Actually diamonds are not at all required for an engagement ring. Some give different stones in their quest to be different.
But, simple is good. A one carat solitaire is very nice.
My former step daughter married a doctor and her center stone was three carat diamond with two carats of baguettes on each side.
It in essence should come from the heart and what you can afford. You can always up grade at an anniversary in the future or even get a very nice anniversary band made up later.
