Why do so many people base their entire lives on horoscopes?!

Question:

Why do so many people base their entire lives on horoscopes?

They're nothing but garbage! I see people on here ask whether they'll do good on a test or meet a nice person based on the stars and the sun or whatever it is people believe in. I don't understand how they believe that if they don't try, the stars will naturally help them do well in life. Why are so many people worried about them?

Answers: I agree. It's sad that people base their lives around the ramblings of charlatans who make all this astronomy stuff up. People should lead their own lives, make their own decisions rather than trust arbitrary advice. There's a reason why "Horoscopes" is placed in the "Entertainment and Music" category on Y!A, because that's what it is: entertainment, nothing else. Some people are superstitious and just believe in that sort of thing. Sometimes I'll read my horoscope in a magazine for fun or somethng, but I never take it seriously. newspapers help perpetuate the myth, every day they have those horoscopes, which aren't true, as they're only "sun sign horoscopes", it's a lot different than getting your whole birth chart done, then at least it would make some sense to "base your entire life" on it. They don't. Most people use it as an entertainment tool. Horoscopes are usually silly. Astrology is often very much real. Either way it's interesting and entertaining.

Why do so many people like you have to spoil the fun? Sometimes they look just for fun. Sometimes they see something that sounds familiar to their situation, and they say, "Hey, that sounds right! Maybe there's something here after all."

The people that write these things use very general, often complimentary terms. And it works - who doesn't like being told that they are hard workers, or important people, or have a keen sense of fashion, or fun to be around.

James Randi, the magician who now debunks spiritualism, ESP, and so forth, does a demonstration on horoscopes. He gives people in a room a horoscope based on their birthday, and asks them if it sounds right. Most agree. Then he has them trade with the person next to them. Surprise - they're all the same prediction. It shows that people like to be flattered, nothing more.

Oh, and Randi has a standing prize of $1 million for anyone who can demonstrate actual supernatural power in laboratory conditions. See his website for details. For some, it's their religion.... it's popular in India I think.

Who really cares what people believe in - I have my own life to run. Sounds like you are the one that doesn't understand astrology. If you did you would know horoscopes in the magazines, newspapers, websites are just for entertainment. The sun sign is too vague and that's what they go off by. Astrology and the like is called magical thinking. This type of irrational and childish belief should have been discarded by education as we grew up. We are supposed to be living in an age of science and reason. Not in ancient superstitions and pseudo-science. It is strange that modern people are drawn to archaic dogma.

Believers don't mind their life being controlled by astrology. Truly, these people just don't want astrology to real, it MUST be real. It does not matter how much testing show that it is no better than chance. The self-delusion remains strong.

Also, an unproven and bigoted idea like astrology is "fun"? How? So you can stereotype your friends? I believe that they affect personalities, but the only one who can affect how well I do in life is me. The stars govern our personalities so perhaps in a way they can affect our moods and whether we FEEL like trying, but in no way are they a guarantee for product. If I do well on a test, it's because I knew the answers, not because the stars deemed it to be. I REFUSE to base my entire life on horoscopes. They are good for compatibilities and advice on how to deal with people, but only when the full natal chart is considered and not just the sun sign. Magazine horoscopes are COMPLETE garbage because 99% of the time they are vague guesses, and the other 1% of the time they would be accurate if the only celestial body that was important was the sun. Of course, since that isn't true, they are ALL garbage. However, until I see a chart that doesn't completely describe the person in question, I will completely believe in TRUE astrology.
