It is a chart of the heavens at the moment/latitude/longitude of your birth.
It will show your planets:
Sun- personality, Moon- how you react emotionally, Venus-what you appreciate, Mars- what you will fight for, (and the remainder of the planets have more of a long range/generational influence.
One considers not only the sign each planet is in, but also the houses (areas of life) they occupy, and thus affect.
The angles the planets form to one another, as well as the angels they form to the houses they rule, show where the energy flows easily, or where you have to work harder to get results.
Understanding this helps many people to reach their potential. Knowing that energy itself is neither good nor bad, it simply is. We choose how to use energies in our chart, and those choices affect the choices we will have tomarrow.
Thus a difficult configuration, such as a grand square, often is prominent in the charts of many successful people, although many would interpret this as a difficult aspect, it gives drive and determination. Understanding that you have choices, and you can turn this energy to work for you is the lesson we can all benefit from.
