Virgos are earth signs and they're not that emotional as sun signs. In fact, some people claim that they are the most logical sign of all.
BUT, you are right about being hard on themselves...they are very detail-oriented and tend to be perfectionists- however, someone who understands them knows that they usually do this (even for their loved ones) not because they want increase pressure but, because this is their way of contributing.
So, the next time your Virgo friend says "There is a horrible spot on your sweater" just answer "Thanks for saying so, darling"

Virgos are overly emotional. I used to date one, that was the most stressful relationship i ever got myself into.

both my brothers and a friend are virgos...they all have big egos but not sure with the emotional one
omg. really not, all Virgo's i know are workaholics and perfectionists, they hardly have any emotions cuz they always are critical on anyone, mostly bad critics.

Virgo seems cool and collected, but they are emotional and sensitive. They criticize themselves too much and find faults that no-one else sees.
I don't think their really emotional. I think some Virgos are really moody.
One of my closest friends is a Virgo, and while she is a sort of a control freak in her relationships, I would say she's rational and not overly emotional in matters of the heart. More likely to analyze everything he says, or doesn't say...she's in her head more than her heart, but she does thrive on attention.
I know several Virgos actually more than that but they are all different; Two don't show any emotion whatsoever altho i made them laugh a number of times with my witty -sarcastic sense of humor, One cries at the drop of a hat, wears heart on sleeve b/c of pisces moon/cancer rising, the other one was quiet- caught him crying a number of times in private -real good friend-real sweet, sensitive guy who put on this cool, mysterious, tough, out-going facade in front of others but when it was just me and him- he knew he could just be himself which i greatly admired and respected him for that. We talked about anything and evrything and seemed to get along real good which rarely happens for me with certain guys. I just get this closed off feeling with some guys and him (virgo) -i didn't get that feeling at all.
The moon sign, not the sun sign, would determine how one reacts on an emotional basis.

I am a Virgo and so is my sister and we are not really emotional. In fact, I can't even deal with people who are overly emotional. When a relationship has ended, all my former mates told me I acted like I didn't care about anything and that they never felt needed, but that is their issue, not mine. I don't have time to coddle to every whim or whine to a grown man to make him feel needed and wanted.
Yes we are our own toughest critics, but that doesn't make us emotional. We are practical and plan just about everything so when things don't go the way we plan, we are hard on ourselves, but it doesn't last long because we always come up with another plan.
