Exactly how reliable or legitimate is astrology? Is it a good or bad idea to bel!

Question: Just curious. I read up on my star sign (Scorpio) on Wikipedia, and it defined me really well. Then again, I discovered Jensen Ackles of Supernatural to be a Pisces, and his real-life persona in interviews -not to mention physical appearance- doesn't really fit IMO (no homo, but it doesn't take a genius to know he's a groupie magnet).

So, umm, yeah...good or bad idea to believe in astrology? All logical answers appreciated. Thanks

If I were you, I would not be quick to believe in anything. If astrology WORKS for you, then it's useful to you; you dont have to believe in it for it to work. If you try to use it and it doesnt work for you, then leave it alone; you dont have to disbelieve in it for it not to work. Go thru life and take what works for you and use it. When you find something that you can use, use it. If at some other time it stops being useful, stop using it. Dont be concerned about believing in something. For example, whether you believe in GRAVITY or not is not going to make any difference as far as whether or not GRAVITY works. It does. Believe in it or dont believe in it.

I dont think it is true, but im sure the individual can derive meaning from it. I think that the way it defines people like you said yourself is that the descriptions are quite broad and you ignore the bits that dont describe yourself without realising.

Basically like everything if you belive it is true then it becomes the truth. As for it being a good idea or a bad idea well it depends what you get out of it at the end of the day just dont take it too literally.

Well if you ask me I'd say don't believe in it.. There's no way we can predict what's going to happen in the future. Maybe some people can but most people don't. Then describing personality using astrology knowledge is also not really accurate in my opinion because I don't think everyone whose are a Leo or whatever it is can have the same characteristics. More importantly ones personality affected by their surroundings.. So final answer is it's a bad idea but this is only just my own opinion...don't know about the others.

Okay. Astrology as a rule, is suppose to determine your future lifestyle, personality and whats to come for you in your life. I say rather than be fooled by horoscopes, astrology is more helpful. It has worked for me on numerous occasions. It describes (Well, the astrology book that I have) a persons personality on the day he or she were born on, the zodiac age lengths in human years, different body areas each sign dominates, central images and cusp concepts, etc.

yes it is a good idea

Better to know than blindly believe. If astrology has truth, belief is not needed.
Is the labeling, stereotyping and pigeon-holing that astrology excels in, have evidence that makes it valid?

"It seems to me what is called for is an exquisite balance between two conflicting needs: the most skeptical scrutiny of all hypotheses that are served up to us and at the same time a great openness to new ideas.... If you are only skeptical, then no new ideas make it through to you.... On the other hand, if you are open to the point of gullibility and have not an ounce of skeptical sense in you, then you cannot distinguish the useful ideas from the worthless ones" - Carl Sagan, 1987.

Astrology can and has been tested. It fails to do better than chance.

i was wondering the same thing till i looked into chinese astrology. i has been brought to my attention that it seems like monthly astrology only plays a small part. but i does play a part. the year is the one that completes the puzzle peice. i used to think that too. why doesnt a month fit as much to one person. its because thier year seems to be dominant.
read" the new chinese astrology" by suzanne white. then you tell me what you think. ive been studying peoples moves and actions now for about 5 years and so far irs so dead on its scary. its even gotten to the point that i can pinpoint a persons year sign just by the softness of their voice, their facial features, how they walk or carry themselves in a conversation. if theyre introverted and extroverted. its also starting to help me see that some signs are more susseptable to illness and depression than others. skysmama77@yahoo.com

I like to hop in on this style question every now and then, because not only have I been doing astrological charts more than 25 years, I also have a real background in real science! Fancy that!

First of all, real astrology uses math; it can not exist without significant calculations of planetary positions, regardless what set of constellationsit uses. There are lots of different types of astrology, and I'm certain most forms of astrology have legitimate astrologers in addition to the plethora of fakes and scam artists the discipline attracts. It's kind of like psychology in that respect. There are good psychologists and psychiatrists, and some real quacks. Psychology and psychiatry use science, indeed, psychiatry incorporates medical knowledge... anyways, slippery slope for me, but there are definitely quacks, and the "science" of psychiatry does not rank as much of a science compared to the science of orthopedics, for example. It's alot harder to find a good psychiatrist than it is to find a good orthopedist. Finding a good astrologer is even harder.

All that said, I'm gonna take the short way out on this answer, and link to answers I've given in the past on this topic that were chosen as best answers. If you have time to read it all, and if you want a solid answer, check it out. I do tend to be wordy.

Someone once asked how anyone could be sure of astrology. I said this:

Linked in that answer is this one, which I gave to someone who was trying to work out some relationship issues through astrology:

Astrology is not a science. Astrology must use math to be legitimate, however. If you locate a legitimate astrologer, I'd say astrology is extremely reliable and legitimate; there *are* legitimate astrologers, but they are a rarity. It is almost always a bad thing to believe in something told to you by a scam artist or quack (note: almost always--if they did not get *some* things right, you'd prolly never talk to them). If you have contact with a legitimate astrologer, it is almost always a good thing to believe what they tell you.

Every legitimate astrologer will know how to do the math, will explain to you the importance of the math, and more likely than not can explain to you the math in terms you can understand--i.e., no smoke and mirrors. There's some trig involved, but it's not impossible to understand, using 3-dimensional models.

No legitimate astrologer would be *ever* be caught saying something like "Gemini and Capricorn can't get along," or "Sagittarius and Leo get along great!" Those people either do not know what they're talking about or they're out to scam the gullible.

Let's see how many fakes gimme the thumbs down! That's one of the most fun parts of giving *real* astrology answers here at yahoo for me! =)

Good luck, have fun!
