What is the average intelligence level of someone who believes in Astrology?!

Question: I am doing a thesis on why otherwise seemingly intelligent people would believe in the paranormal, and so far, people who go to psychics are more likely to come from poor backgrounds and / or rural settings. What about horoscope believers?

Answers: I am doing a thesis on why otherwise seemingly intelligent people would believe in the paranormal, and so far, people who go to psychics are more likely to come from poor backgrounds and / or rural settings. What about horoscope believers?

The power of belief is the main factor. There are trends for astrology. Women are more likely then men to believe as are ethnic groups likely as well. The least are the ones with the most education. Introduce critical thinking in high school would be helpful. There is a high amount of science illiteracy, most believers think astrology is a proved science. Also that psychic ability is widespread to the point of routine. Try to tell them that no one, in the history of the world, has proved anything paranormal. Having an "open-mind" works both ways. Believers must learn that they can be wrong too. But they can't admit to that possibility.

Blind belief is often more powerful than truth.

Edit: Ask yourself this not as a belief but rationally. Humans are the center of the universe. The stars and planets were made for nothing else but to guide humans though their short life span. That this is true and it works no matter where on earth you are. Even if you are born to ethnic heroin addict in a large city, to a Peruvian farmer, or a Mongolian nomad. There is no free will. Because if we do have free will, there is no point to believe in astrology

1 thing should have nothing to do with the other

I have a 140 and though I don't believe in astrology I find it incredibly interesting.

I have never been to a psychic, but I read astrology and not to brag, but I prove myself to be a great student (4.0 GPA) studying to be a cardiovascular surgeon :). My aunt believes in astrology too and she became a lawyer at age 26. Some people have faith in things others don't cotton on just like religion. It doesn't matter were you come from, it only matters what makes sense to you. All I know is that believing in something is a beautiful thing.

I consider myself a smart, well educated girl. I'm also very down to earth, but it doesn't stop me from having my beliefs. Maybe statistical studies show some correlation between higher social class and non-believers, but I don't think one should have to determine the other. I'm not relgious in an organized sense, but I'm spiritual and very open minded. I just recently got into astrology and the more I study it the more I believe it, it's just a personal thing I guess =]

I believe in horoscopes and paranormal stuff and I consider myself to be intelligent. I don't think it has anything to do with ignorance. It has to do with faith. You see that most priests and religious leaders are intelligent yet they believe in a higher power... they have faith!

I feel that if you believe you are a free thinker. Human beings have the ability to believe in anything they like.

There is no proof God exists and the more ancient history I studied for my Masters degree, the more agnostic I became. I still believe in God and I am one proud libra.

if chainlightning knew anything about astrology he would not have said anything he just did.

i'm a "man" and i know of tons of men astrologers. in fact it seems to be about even in terms of professionally and how many there are. some famous male astrologers: robert hand, llewellyn george, noel tyl, steven forest, johannes kepler (yes he did astronomy but he was very into astrology and actually contributed much; most people don't know it but if you did your research, you would) and and even galilei galileo was very active in astrological studies.

these are just a few. there are tons of "not-so-famous" astrologers worldwide.

and last time i checked my IQ was 138 so i don't buy for one second that "studiers of astrology" are less intelligent.

I know a very intelligent Yale graduate who believes in astrology but doesn't put too much weight into horoscopes.

so....are you also saying like believing in the paranormal, astrology is seemingly not intelligent?

i love reading about the horoscope, astrology, religion, palmistry, etc esp the paranormal, even meeting psychics in person. i enjoy every second of it- no matter how shallow and stupid it seems for some. maybe im just stubborn then. lol. but tell you what, it doesnt make me any less intelligent than im already am and infact, it does make me more intelligent than i was before.

i have a degree in engineering w honours, mind you- lol, turned down masters degree offer, have been luckily enough to have travelled around over 5 continents, even though im just a quarter century old and now working as a freelance photographer and at the same time, prospecting for a second degree.

seems average dont it? i dont know what my intelligence level is but i can bet that my IQ points wont make it to MENSA. lmao. but just for the record, if you want a number- just put mine as 70. i just like the number of it. =P.

i guess, at the end of the day, if one were to not discriminate and rather respect every belief/ claim/ experience that comes to them as a piece of knowledge, knowing any kind of knowledge, is actually being intelligent in their own rights and not less or more, though some feel it should be that way as it clearly would set them apart than the rest. thats utterly sad but....ohh, rant...rant....luck for you and the thesis. =)

Don't blame it on the Tooth Fairy, you have no problem opening yourself up to ridicule at all. Your statement of "people who go to psychics are more likely to come from poor backgrounds and / or rural settings" is completely asinine.

What part of "belief" can't you comprehend? ALL People whether they are:
1. rich or poor
2. live in the city or rural areas
3. intelligent or mentally challenged
-- have their own beliefs, so I fail to see the connection in the circumstances that you mentioned.

Oh, by the way, Astrology has nothing to do with paranormal or psychics either.

I.Q. - 138, depending on my mood
Education: Master's degree
Career: R.N. / business owner
background: middle class
and I am a believer in Astrology.
You might want to start your thesis on a less biased and opinionated hypothesis so you don't inadvertently skew your findings and conclusions. Also, because one believes in Astrology does not necessarily mean one believes in the daily horoscopes. Regarding psychics, many people simply find it interesting / entertaining and not necssarily "believe in them" .
