Know what specifically? If you go to www.astro.ch/atlas and type in your birthplace and time, etc. you can get a detailed horoscope chart, and it will look like a lot of Greek to you if you don't know about astrology but there are any number of good astrology books out there that could help you figure it out. Basically, each planet is in a sign and in a house. A planet represents something in your personality, for example the moon= emotions. The sign is the way your personality works, like a Moon in Aries person would react really quickly and be somewhat strong and independent, whereas a Moon in Taurus person would be relatively calmer, and tend not to change their mind as much. Then the house tells which area of life this affects the most. For instance, if your moon was in the second house, which rules money, you would feel very emotionally invested in how wealthy or not you are, and how many material possessions you had.
But for a good overview, I recommend Parker's Astrology, by Julia and Derek Parker, or Planets in Youth, by Robert Hand, which is really good for everyone, even if it is technically written for doing children's charts. A big Barnes and Noble would have them. Or Amazon.
Retrograde just means a planet is moving backwards. It doesn't have a huge influence on your natal chart. It is more a predictive astrology thing. When a planet is moving backwards (not actually changing it's orbit, but moving back into the path of a sign that it had previously left) it can affect things that have to do with the area that it rules. For instance, retrograde Mercury can supposedly make it difficult to communicate with people.
