Probably because you are only looking at Sun sign compatibility which is useless in relationships. Real astrologers will never compare Sun signs and try to tell you whether the relationship is going to work. And GOOD astrologers will never tell you anything is set in stone. Since free will is the deciding factor in everything, if you are willing to put time and effort into a "incompatible" relationship it's more than possible to have a completely loving and happy relationship. One last thing, you said long and long doesn't always equal to good. Many women who are beaten by their husbands stay with them for years and years and there is nothing good about that.
To get a good idea on how "easy" or "challenging" a relationship is going to be, you would want to look at a couple's Moon signs and Venus signs, and it doesn't hurt to look at Mercury signs.
