He may have very few but this is unlikely unless he was born on a cusp (the changing date from one star sign to the next, in this case 23rd,24th or 25th). Be proud to have a cancer, they love thier family :)

I'm not convinced far away objects can have a lifetime effect on anyone, but I have read some books and yes, astrologers say your son will share some traits of Leos.

No, not from his sun sign but venus and mercury are only ever placed two signs away from his sun sign. Therefore he may communicate in a way connected with taurus, gemini, leo or virgo. His venus will also operate in one of these signs.
Leo starts on the 23rd of July. My baby was due the 18th of July so I expected a Cancer & got a Leo on the 25th. It's quite likely your son will have the traits of a Cancer and maybe some of Leo, but he's still a Cancer. My husband's family is mostly all July and all Cancers. Our baby was the only non Cancer in July & she is much more a Leo than Cancer. There is no "almost" in Sun signs. The date and time a person was born indicates what Sun sign they are. Degrees of a sign are not precentages. 1Leo16 is no less Leo than 25Leo42. 29Cancer58 is no more Leo than 5Cancer23. There is no such thing as sign cusps*. The concept of cusp in regard to natal charts refers to house cusps which is an entirely different matter.
However, there are 10 basic bodies astrologers use in deliniation. The Sun is the most prominent but it is not the only star. As someone else mentioned, Venus and Mercury travel close to the Sun and are likely to be in the sign next to the Sun sign or the same sign. Also a strong house emphasis can make someone seem a sign other than what they are by Sun. Then there is the asendant. Planetary aspects, particularly those to the sun and moon. Too many factors to name. You would have to get an indepth chart reading to be sure.
*Cusps for the procession of the ages is also a different matter. Those are estimated to be from 40-100 years.
Yes your son is a Cancer, but will share some Leo traits. My daughter was born on 24 July 1993 at 0048 hours, yet on preparing her natal chart she is only 1.6 degrees into Leo. She has a lot of Cancerian traits. The movement of one sign into another changes from year to year.
