In reality, all zodiac signs can get depressed, except some bounce back from setbacks faster than others.
The Earth sign most prone to depression is Capricorn. Somehow, Saturn-ruled natives have an indisputable aura of melancholy around them, no matter what kind of front they put on. They can totally confuse the material with the emotional realm. Similarly for Virgo, with the woekaholic tendencies and if they continue to provide endless selfless service to others.
And I have also read Gemini can be prone to depresson due to their dual nature, always trying to balance the two and getting unsatisfactory results.
Sagittarius is the surprise package. Their buoyant optimism can turn to depression if not handled well (Symbol of Jupiter looks like Saturn inverted). The depression also sets in when their fight for an ideal/cause becomes thwarted. The problem really happens when they forget to look within themselves for answers.

I think that it is more of a function of which planets are in which houses and when. It is not just a simple Sun sign bit. Then you need to factor in how they were raised and what was passed on genetically.
You may have a natural tendency for emotion if you are water sign but that doesn't lead to depression any more than the reserved nature of earth signs does. It is not a simple formula. Ever sign has it's turn.
