well im a cancer myself... and i can tell you some signs that i had when i was in love.
im not sure if your guy is depressed at all. but when i met that special girl. all my depression. i was happy. and not just smiling happy. i mean truely happy. i woke up every morning wanting to be awake(that might be a little hard for you to see in him unless you live together)
when i fell in love. i stopped looking at other girls. and not because i felt like it was wrong. but because no other girl was attractive to me. the only girl i wanted was the one i was with

If he is in love, his chronic misery will dissipate. He will want to see you just about every day. He will be very physically affectionate with you once that barrier has been crossed. He may not tell you that he is in love with you, but rather - he may prefer just to show you that he's in love. Oftentimes he will make conservative gestures of old-fashioned courtship (buy you flowers, hold your hand, put his arm around you while walking down the sidewalk, et al...). When these things are apparent, you can be almost certain that he is in love with you.
