What is a descendant sign, and what does it mean?!

Question: The descendant is opposite your ascendant, it's the cusp to the 7th house. Libra influences the 7th house so how do you relate to partners, to people with whom you have a contractual relationship like a husband or wife.

It's not just what you want from another, but what you're willing to take, what you need from them. That "need" is reflected in the sign that's in the 7th house. The partner will fill in a "need" in a person that is lacking in that person's chart.

For example, someone with a Capricorn rising will have Cancer in the 7th house, so they might be drawn to a younger partner, someone they can "parent" or "take care of" in some way. They might treat their friends like "family".

The descendant in a birth chart is the point opposite the ascendant.

If you are Aquarius rising, Leo is the sign of your descendant. I read a great description of the significance of the descendant in Steven Forrest's book called Sky Mates:

"Think of the Descendant this way: the Ascendant, representing our face or our mask, is by its very nature a superficial symbol. This is not to diminish the significance of its role in the birth chart, only to indicate that its field of action is the surface of the personality. Such "streamlining" of the psyche is essential if we are to meet the functional requirements of daily life. But it comes at a cost. Much of what we actually are as human beings is left out of expression. A risk exists that we might become too identified with our masks and therefore shallow and rigid, caricatures of ourselves. Human consciousness, as reflected in astrological symbolism, seems to recognize this problem and make an effort to compensate for it. We are drawn to people whose natures are opposite our own - people, in other words, who have qualities like those symbolized by our descending sign. Typically, after the intoxication of the initial attraction, we experience an emotional tug-of-war with our partner as our characters seek to come into equilibrium. But that tug-of-war insures that neither one of us becomes a two-dimensional cartoon of our ascending sign, cocksure and empty.

"[Take an example of a woman who is] Taurus rising. The sign opposite Taurus is Scorpio, which is her Descendant. Here's how it works for her: with her Taurean Ascendant, there is a risk that she could become too flat and complacent in her outer expression, and that some of the more complex and shadowy dimensions of life could be denied-which of course would only give them more power in the long run. Put very simply, she could become too docile and "grounded" for her own good, while her tricky psychological ambiguities and hungers slowly inched toward the boiling point.

Enter the Descendant - or perhaps we should say "enter her soulmates."

With Scorpio on her seventh house cusp, our Taurean is drawn in mutual attraction to individuals whose natures emphasize Scorpio qualities. These are people who like to delve into the murky areas of human consciousness, asking hard questions and breaking conventional social taboos in their interactions with her. They may upset her at times, but she needs them lest her life become too prosaic. Similarly, she might in turn help them by giving them a more "chicken soup" perspective on themselves, helping them laugh, relax, and perhaps take themselves a bit less seriously.

Despite the delicacy of the purpose it serves, the operation of the Descendant is largely unconscious and automatic. We simply like people who resonate with our seventh houses. We are drawn to them. We experience, initially at least, an easy comradeship with them, often spiced with romantic or sexual feelings. Only once the bonds have formed does the much more subtle "combat" of balancing, deepening, and healing begin."

The descendant is one of the angles (rising, MC, IC), hence a more powerful spot than the other spots in the chart.

So if you have planets here, their energy become more like a floodlight, and people will see it more, too. Actors, politicians, etc, will often have stuff in the angle houses, including the 7th.

The descendant is also the cusp of the 7th house, which is legal partners and legal "stuff" (not to be confused with love affairs, which is the 5th house), one-on-one serious stuff.

If someone has alot of planets in this house, they tend to view life through "the other" and not have the best sense of self. It's a "social" house.

Ascendent is how you show yourself to the world. The Descendent is how you view the others. It is also the house of partnership which confirms what I have just said. The 7th house is marriage and partnership and relates to successful or unsuccessful relations.
It also shows your attitude toward other people on a permanent basis and their attitude towrd dealing with peers.

Ex:, Gemini in Descendent would give a mental approach to relationship whereas Leo, it would indicate a demanding but proud and loyal partner.
The person requiresa partner who is intellectually stimulating.
With Capricorn, indicates one who has responsibility, a practical side. The person expresses the need to find firm ground because Cancer on the Ascendent makes one too emotional.
The sign opposite of Ascendent is where we can determine what quality in others attracts you.
The 1st house speaks about the relationship i have with myself but the 7th speaks of partnerships. It is the house that speaks to us about out "shadow self", the part of our own nature that is reflected in the the "open warfare" we have with others.
