It is the appearance and demeanor. You can see and feel the true Scorpio nature, but if you can get passed that outward display of the personality, you will see what is truly behind the mask which can be quite different. It is amazing when you discover that what scared you initially is nothing like what is really there inside, except, of course, if there is a lot of other Scorpio influence in the chart. Then you better watch out - ha, ha.
Well it all depends on what else is in the chart. I'm a sun sign Virgo with Scorpio rising, and a Taurus moon. So, I can be a real BRAT sometimes! lol
I don't know those with Scorpio rising to be scary people. Perhaps more private and secretive, intimidating and naturally seductive, but I would not describe them as outwardly scary.
Um, I'm Aquarius w/ Scorpio rising.. I'm not scary and I don't know why you would suspect a person w/ Scorpio rising to be "scary", please elaborate?
They just have the intense gaze (kinda piercing). I'm one but i have a cancer sun/pisces moon which makes me seem a little more friendly. Thats not to say without a friendly sun sign, that a scorpio ascendant would still be scary.

My dd is a virgo with scorpio rising. She is one of the most beautiful and loving persons I have ever known. I'm a logical Virgo with Gemini Rising, so I am thinking with my head with this one!!
I think that ALL the Planets, Sun and Moon need to be interpreted as a WHOLE and not just a bit here and a bit there.
Maybe because the rising sign is what shows to the world where the sun sign is who you are inside. In other words people with a scorpio sun sign you may not notice that they are a scorpio until you get to know them. But a rising sign is what shows to others and gives the first impression. Since Scorpio is such an intense sign and someone has it as a rising sign you are going to see that first opposed to waiting to get to know them.
Scorpio rising people give off an intense vibe that sometimes makes you back away.They usually have very intense eyes and their personlaity is magnetic,and intense.Scorpio rising people take life seriously,and they are very passionate about everything they do.They take love seriously and they do not like to be played with emotionally,because they have a tendency to take revenge out on someone who has done them wrong,but i don't think that they are scary people i think that they are just intense.
Because they are outwardly intense. Sun sign Scorpios are inwardly intense. Rising signs show how the world perceives you.
