Mercury is currently 9 degrees into Aries and in my 3rd house. How does that eff!

Mercury's orbit is actually closer to the earth's orbit around the sun (although faster), that's why sun, mercury and venus are always found within three consecutive signs in a persons chart: the sun sign, and then either the sign before or the sign after the sun sign. Of course all three can be in one sign, or two in one and one in another, but they're always really close together, anyhow. A Mercury transit through a sign will last about 3 weeks, similar to a Venus transit. Solar transits of course last about a month. Mercury's transit through the houses will vary in length, since they're not all the same size, so Mercury transiting your 3rd could be a bit more or less than the three weeks it's going to take for Mercury to travel through Aries. Some of the things that you can expect from a Mercury transit of your 3rd would be increased communication (you've been asking a *lot* of Q's the past couple of days:)), lots of short trips, not major long ones, but little day trips, or just commuting for work, stuff like that. 3rd house also has to do with siblings and extended family, so would not be surprised if some of this communication and short travel has to do with brothers or sisters, or aunts, uncles, cousins, etc...
When Mercury's transiting my 3rd, I always feel even more communicative and social than normal, so you may experience this as well.
In order to understand exactly how this transit will effect you though, you need to take into consideration what aspects Mercury will be making to other planets/angles/etc...in your chart while it's transiting your 3rd. That will give you the whole story.
EDIT: :-) Interesting how it works, isn't it? As far as the rest of your question goes (I'm sorry, I forgot about the last bit while I was answering the first part), when Mercury moves into your 4th, expect to be thinking more about your home/roots, possibly working or studying from home as well, planning little fix-it projects...stuff like that. In the 5th, mercury will express itself creatively and through fun and social outings and romance. And etc...on down the line:)
