if one is going to rip the wings off, and knowing it can help survival and sustainability, feeding his/ her family, yes, why not!?
besides, the average butterfly only lives around a month, you know!. it helps to check what species it is, some life span from a week to several months!. it will die, anyway, very soon enough, of natural causes!.
and its only typical human to say that a beautiful thing like a butterfly shouldnt be destroyed!. but what if the butterfly were to be substitute with a bowl of live maggots, eat it alive and receive $5000, would that be a controversial of the same kind!? HAH! why maggots get the double standard!?
the only thing i cay say is, there are much much more unthinkable things in this world, that has led many people when being in the state of deprivation, succumbed to doing in order to live comfortably, makes tearing off a butterfly wings seems living in intergrity, still very much intact!.

I wouldn't!. I'm not that into money, and I can always find a way to get money without killing something!. Never been homeless, but I know that when many of the government-funded psychological counseling establishments went corporate, many people were turned to the streets!. If we could pour more of our tax money into helping these folks, perhaps we wouldn't have to resort to these types of quandries!. Not that into bugs, but I ususally just put them outside!. Very interesting question, though, as yours usually are!

And, who knows, maybe it's whole purpose in life was to give me the opportunity to take $5000 bucks from the questionable person who's offering such a contest!.

However, to answer your question, I would never cheapen myself with such behavior as long as I am comfortable!. I don't know since half of me(the sadistic and cold side) would do it regardless of money because I wouldn't care for it!.The other half(the warm and compassionate side) wouldn't do it because that would be cruel,and besides what did it ever do to me to deserve thats kind of abuse!.
