The word "horoscope" comes from a Greek term ("horoscopos" I believe) that meant "watcher of the hour" This watcher of the hour was the point on the eastern horizon at birth!. Today we call this the "ascendant" or rising degree!. In the old texts the word "horoscope" was used when the author meant "ascendant!." Over time the meaning changed and today it is used to mean the entire chart!. Ancient Greeks or even medieval astrologers would never use the term "I'm a Pisces" or I'm a Gemini!." It would not have made sense to them particularly since the rising degree was considered so important!.
