You can check Alan Leo "Key to your Nativity!. Very informative and thorough!. You also have alan Oken's complete astrology (700 pages!.)
That should give you a good starter!. Once you learn the meanings of signs, house, aspects, you need intuition and insight to properly do a reading!.
You can have a full mechanical tool set but that doesn't make you car mechanic!. Practice on people you know well and try to relate to what book interpretation suggests!.
You have to start somewhere and after reading thousands of books like I did and am sure one poster here did also , then you have to combine the ingredients!.

To be honest, astrology software is a pretty poor substitute for going to a professional astrologer!.
Software will give you a piece by piece description (Mars in Scorpio means ________ and Saturn in Capricorn means _________ and Pluto in the 6th house means ________ ) but that's all piecemeal!.!.!. a good astrologer knows how to weigh all the points and pieces of a chart and put together a holistic picture!.!.!.
Software might be a good place to start, but don't stop there!.
