Why are earth signs described as ''feminine'' and what does that!

Astrology uses masculine and feminine terms to describe the polarity!. It's like Yin and Yang!. Feminine refers to receptivity and not gender!. They are also referred to as the Negative or Passive signs in some antiquated astrology texts!. vice versa for Masculine!.
