Answers:
They are imaginary lines, like the ecliptic and the equator!. The lines are properly called "cusps!." Signs do not have cusps!. Houses have cusps!. They are divisions of the sky based on the horizon and midheaven at the place of the observer!. Therefore at any one instant a planet can be in all 12 houses simultaneously!. If Mars is rising (in the first house) in New York at about 6:00 AM, at the same time, it is in the 10th house in Germany where it is noon!. There are something like 50 ways to divide up the heavens into 12 houses; 6 above and 6 below the horizon!. Some use the ecliptic, some use the celestial equator as a reference point!. The most popular house system in use today is called Placidus after the man who popularized it, but did not actually invent it!. It is based on time!.

The Koch system, another popular one, is based on oblique ascension!. The Regiomontanus system, favored by horary astrologers, is based on a division along the equator!.

No one has ever demonstrated that any one house system is more accurate than any other!. Making that claim about a house system is a good way to get a group of astrologers fighting!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Imaginary lines!.
http://en!.wikipedia!.org/wiki/House_(astr!.!.!.
The ascendant marks the sign rising in the east and the descendant the sign setting in the west
Anything from the cusp of the 1st house to the cusp of the 7th is below the horizon therefore not visible at that point in time and from cusp of 7th to cusp of 1st above the horizon!. You can tell whether it was a day or night birth therefore by noting where the sun is placed in the chartWww@Enter-QA@Com

As you state, houses are imaginary lines that sub-divide the zodiac into 12 specific arc or areas called houses!. If in terms of space the arcs are of 30° each, one twelfth of the circle of 360°!.

A House is a two-hour segment of a twenty-four-hour cycle, repeated each day with minor variants!. The First House, the Ascendant is the degree that, from a given point on the Earth's surface, was rising above the eastern horizon at a given moment of time!. The opposite is the Descendant!. Between them is the Mid- heaven, the opposite point below the Earth, is the I!.C!. or lowest point!.

Poseidon & Tom expained it quite well actually!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

When I do a horoscope, I have some papers with large circles on them!. I find the Ascendant and place it at 9:00 on the circle and draw lines to create a sector or pie slice shape for the First House!. I draw lines to make 12 of these sectors for the Houses!. A circle has 360 degrees, so each House covers 30 degrees!. Then, I place the planets in the Houses!. It is difficult to visualize them without my circle diagram!. I bought many sheets at astrology school, but I an draw my own too!. You can visualize them by baking or buying a pie and cutting it into 12 pieces or by drawing a circle with 12 sectors, as I do!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
