Question:

On Dane Cook's Vicious Circle bit about lying to avoid going to a party..he talks about walking a " B - line "

What does that refer to ? I can't figure it out and it's eating at me...

Answers:

Actually, it's a BEE line. As in, bees in a hive. When a bee has found a field of flowers, she returns to her hive and tells her her hivemates how to get to the field by doing a little "dance," which includes her walking in a zig-zag pattern. The other bees imitate her dance and follow her in a line, thereby learning the directions to the flowers. How, exactly, this works is still a mystery.

In English, we use the word "beeline" in a contrary sense. "Making a beeline for the ice cream truck," for example, means heading right for it. But bees only head right for something after they've gotten the directions via the "dance," which is the real bee line.
