What's causing this smell in my trash can?

There is something in my trash can right now that is causing an awful stink. It's kind of like rotten goat cheese, mixed with maybe some bad women's perfume. It's really noticeable. I don't want to reach around in there for it cause I think one of my wife's tampons is in there. Oh, it is a vicious odor. My dog is in the laundry room and he does not want to come out. I saw him eat his own vomit once, so that's how bad this smell is. What is it? Imagine a pig farm where all the pigs eat is rotten eggs and there's a big pile of burning tires next door. I would put on some latex gloves, but I think whatever it is might eat through them. One of the neighbors just called and they're not happy. I'm supposed to be having a party tonight and I seriously don't think this smell is leaving anytime soon. Does anyone know what's causing it? Open your window and you can probably smell it if you're in the continental US.

I don't see how buying another trash can is going to help. We'll still have this smelly one sitting here. Oh, and our plumbing is from 1968, but thanks anyway.
