A friend asked me this the other day and I have been thinking about it ever since. I can't figure it out! I hope its not super easy and I and I'm just being dumb. Here it goes:
Three old ladies go out to lunch. Their bill is $27 dollars so they all throw in a ten dollar bill. The waiter takes the $30 to the cashier who realizes there was a mistake and their bill was only $25. The cashier gives the waiter back five one dollar bills. The waiter thought to himself "I can't split this evenly between the three women". So he pocketed the two dollars and gave each woman back one dollar. So each woman had paid $9.
9 x 3 = 27
27 + 2 = 29 (two dollars waiter pocketed)
Where'd the other dollar go?
Please help. I feel so stupid.

The bill is changed to $25, so the change would be 5 dollars. Apparently the riddle said he pocketed 2 dollars, so there are 3 dollars left for change. Since there are 3 women, he gave each of them 1 dollar. So...
10 X 3 = 30 (women paid 30 dollars)
30 - 25 = 5 (5 dollars for change)
5 - 2 = 3 (3 dollars left after waiter took 2 of them)
3 / 3 = 1 (each woman got 1 dollar back) this questions has been posted and put in different variations so many times on this site.
Correction: Each woman did not pay $9. They each Paid $8.33.

The trick is that the puzzle is written incorrectly. the extra dollar is there to make a common denominator, the man pocketed 2 dollars remember? not one. ok each of the ladies paid $9 which includes the $2 that the waitor put in his pocket. so 9*3=27, which gives each lady $1 back. 27+3=30. You're adding $2 to $27 when the bill was really only $25. 25 + 2 (the amount the waiter pocketed) = 27 The remaining $3 is what he gave back to the women.
